Spring cleaning feels great when it’s done, but motivating yourself to get started can be hard. Here is some good news and a little motivation to get started… Cleaning can save you money! Include a few of our tips on your spring cleaning checklist and you can cut energy costs by getting better performance from your appliances, exhaust fans, and lights.
Dry Clothes Faster
Clear the lint from your dryer exhaust hose. If you have a flexible hose try replacing it with a smooth metal ducting to improve air flow, dry clothes faster, and reduce dryer energy use.
Clean Your Lights
Dust or wipe off light bulbs to provide more light for your money. Remember to be sure to unplug lamps and make sure that all lights are turned off before you start cleaning them. You can also replace incandescent light bulbs with CFLs and use up to 75% less energy for lighting.
Clean Your Refrigerator Coils
Cleaning dust off the coils in the back of the refrigerator will make it run much more efficiently and save both energy and money.
Pull your fridge away from the wall and unplug it.
Find the coils—and the dust! (there’s sometimes a plate covering the coils)
Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust, or soap and water if it looks really bad back there.
Make sure coils are completely dry before replacing plate and moving fridge back.
*Also check to that products aren’t blocking the fan vents in the fridge and freezer
Change Your Air Conditioner Filter
You can save 5%-15% on cooling costs just by making sure that your A/C filter is clean. This is easy to do, and you should change the air filter in your home 2-4 times a year. This will also help improve air quality within your home and reduce dust in the air.
Clean Inside Your Dishwasher
Dirty dishwashers waste water and energy. Follow these steps to make sure that it is operating efficiently
Cut the power or unplug.
Use vinegar and water to clean the racks and door
Check the spinning arms and vents in there, clearing out any debris—a toothbrush works well for hard to reach areas
Check around the door to make sure no dirt is preventing the seals from closing.
