The master bedroom of your home is the most important room because it is your haven. It is the place you retreat to after a long day of work or caring for the kids. It is important that your master bedroom provides you with an atmosphere that is relaxing, comforting, and welcoming. It must be a place you look forward to going to and promotes a good night’s sleep. Here are a few tips to make your master bedroom a place you love.
1) Wall colors
Because the walls are the biggest area in the room it is important to stick to a color that is neutral and will promote relaxation. If you are unsure of what colors to go with This Old House article, How to Choose the Right Colors for Your Rooms, can help!
2) Three points of light
Conventional design theory says that every room should have three sources of light to work with. This is especially important in the master bedroom because of the different purposes the room serves. Soft bedside lighting allow for a peaceful mood, bright overhead lights are for dressing, and direct lamps or bullet lights are good for reading or other projects you may do in your room.
3) Your bed
Studies show that one third of your life is spent sleeping, so why wouldn’t you invest money in the place you spend all these hours. Carefully choose your mattress, pillows, and bedding so that you know you will truly enjoy (and make the most of) the time you spend here.
4) Window treatments that can block out light
Luxurious window treatments in the master bedroom not only add a touch of elegance, but also serve a very necessary purpose– blocking out the light! This allows you to get a more restful nights sleep, especially if your bedroom windows face east, or are located in a neighborhood with lots of street lights. Layering a heavy drape over a sheer linen curtain allows you to have soft light during the day and block out the light at night. Check out our article on properly hanging curtains to help you layer.
5) A view
Waking up in the morning is much easier if you have something beautiful to look at. If your home doesn’t have a picturesque view, create something beautiful to look at. Hang your favorite piece of art or photos so you always see something you like when you first wake up.
You are never going to want to step out of your bed if you are stepping onto a cold hardwood floor. Hardwood floors are beautiful, so if you have opted to have wood in your room add a plush rug for you to sink your toes into as you climb out of bed in the morning.
Creating a bedroom you never want to leave does not have to be expensive or time consuming. I hope you found the tips to create your own oasis helpful. Do you have a favorite or any other tips for our readers?
